Set in the near future after a global war which has changed America into a country of sectors, many controlled by the Cosa Nostra, a truly nasty mafia like conglomerate which controls access to almost everything we take for granted, electricity, fresh food, oil, gas, cars….

Casey Russo, the main character has a past, one which he likes to keep hidden, his new life living in a barn on his friends farm seems to go well for him until one fateful day the Costa Nostra come visiting and demand a debt which the farm owner and Casey’s friend George has wracked up and has no way of settling. The demands are cruel, Billy, Georges son is taken hostage until George can find the payment. Billy will be taken to ‘The Pitts’ outside what was Cincinna, they are literally pitts where unfortunates fight to the death – like a futuristic Roman gladatorial arena.

George and his wife don’t know what to do until Casey volunteers to travel to the Cosa Nostra’s headquarters to plea for Billy’s life and his return. Little does Casey know that this will lead him into a dangerous heist and the uncovering of his true past.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I started reading this book, the idea is pleasantly different for dystopian fiction and after a slow start, the book clunks quickly into high speed gear and literally drags you into the storyline as Casey goes on his mission.

I’m really looking forward to seeing where this series goes!
